Utility Name: Cipher
Status: Modified in Windows Vista
Description:
Cipher is used to encrypt and decrypt data on NTFS drives and to view that current encryption status of files and folders.
- Using the /ADDUSER switch allows Windows Vista to provide a credential of a user access to an encrypted file.
- Cipher allows the use of a certificate hash or a certificate file by using the /CERTFILE switch.
- If you are using a certificate file, Cipher accesses the certificate hash in the file and records it.
- When using the /B switch, Cipher will abort execution on encountering an error.
- The /C switch will display information about the encrypted file.
- The /REKEY switch allows Windows Vista to update the specified files to use the current configured EFS key, typically the key associated with the current users account. The user needs to have access to the new key and the old key.
